People Are Claiming To Be From NBN

Have you had NBN sales reps on your door step? Beware people claiming to be from NBN may be on their way!

itro is warning clients and businesses to be aware of crafty scam artists pretending to be from National Broadband Network Co (NBN Co) requesting personal information such as site and office plans, current phone plans and Internet connections. The information given will be used by sleek sales reps to lure you into buying new equipment or new connections you don’t need.

Scamwatch reports over 316 complaints have been received this year alone about scammers impersonating NBN Co employees with nearly $28,000 reported stolen1. Australian Competition and Consumer commission (AACC) Deputy Chair, Delia Rickard said “Scammers are increasingly using trusted government brands like NBN Co to trick people into falling for scams. Their goal is always to either get hold of your money or personal information.”

People are also claiming to be from Telstra!

Some will say they are from Telstra but won’t provide any identification and are not wearing branded clothing, which is a big red flag you are dealing with a scammer. Keep in mind only NBN Co clothing identifiable employees will ever come on site to install the service. The rest are shady sales people.

On the flip-side, these may be legitimate sellers of NBN Co but think carefully before saying yes to something you may not necessarily need.
