Why is Having a Secure Backup System a Must?

Cyber crime Statistics Are Staggering

The explosion in online hacks and theft has software companies, business and governments scrambling.

  • MailGuard, Australia’s leading email security company, warns of hackers using known business brands or pirated apps to steal your money, such as file-sharing platform Box, USD Wire Transfer, Invoice2Go, Optus, Xero, Netflix, Australia Post, the ATO.
  • Symantec announced their engineers were inundated with Mobile Security Incidents in Q1 of 2019.
  • Government agency ACORN, for period 01 April to 30 June 2018, shows Victoria is the second hardest hit from reported cyber attacks across Australia.

No business is immune.

Hackers are on the rise

Hackers are distributing pirated versions of popular apps, like Spotify, Angry Birds and Minecraft. Embedded in the apps is code that leaves iPhones exposed to upload of malicious media files via Bluetooth or WiFi. Therefore sending emails or sharing files between personal and business-use devices spreads contamination and risk of your devices being compromised.

Governments are scared too

2018 saw a big increase is mandatory data breach notification laws around the world, which affect us here in Australia. For example,

  • The European Union introduced the most sweeping data protection law changes in the world when the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on 25 May 2018. The GDPR enhances obligations to notify regulators and individuals of data breaches. 2018… saw the first penalty issued under the GDPR, however, we are yet to see an entity fined for a failure to comply with the data breach notification requirement.
  • In Australia, the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) Scheme came into effect on 22 February 2018. Since the introduction of the NDB Scheme, 550 data breaches have been reported, up from 114 reported in the 2016-17 financial year. We are yet to see enforcement action taken regarding failure to comply with the NDB Scheme.
  • As of 1 July 2018, mandatory data breach notification regimes have been implemented in every US state, after Alabama and South Dakota passed legislation coming into effect on 1 June and 1 July 2018 respectively.  In 2018, amendments were made to data breach notification legislation in Oregon and Colorado.

Do something, do it now

Don’t make the mistake of thinking no one would target your business, hacker or disgruntled employee. Craig McDonald, MailGuard CEO, makes this powerful statement:

“An IT or Infosec leader who is resistant to technological change, or who isn’t always talking about new threats, or new security products is a danger to businesses. If I had someone like this on my team, I’d be worried – and seriously thinking about a staffing reassignment”.

Therefore, it’s MUCH cheaper for you to take preventative action than try and recover post-attack! Act now, for a minimal monthly outlay, and protect your business.
